The Kittens

*1 month later*

The relationship between Francis and Arthur has improved greatly! Arthur and Francis do have moments of hissing, yowling and paw swats. Despite it, they eat together, sleep together, groom each other, and purr in each other’s presence. As if they were, as you looked at it, “A match made in heaven.”

You pulled off the highway into the supermarket’s parking lot after a day at work. You stepped out of your car. “Okay, I need more cat food, bread, chips, something sweet…” As you rambled to yourself when you spotted an animal lying motionless on the concrete. Concerned, you tip-toed over to not startle such animal if it was still alive. Upon further inspection, it was a stray cat, and it was indeed dead. You sighed sadly. “Such a pity it had to go as a stray.” You sighed. As you stood, you heeded a tiny squeak. Alarmed you examined the cat again, still no signs of life, but then you heard it again.

You stood still, completely quiet. It was a soft but constant noise. You searched around and found a highway concrete drainage pipe. You approached it cautiously and the sound became clear. You got on your hands and knees and looked into the pipe. You softly gasped.

In the pipe were two newborn kittens, so fluffy with their furry down, their sweet mewls pulled the toughest heartstrings, their eyes still shut tight. One was slightly bigger than the other and even though their fur was mucked up with filth, they both had white fur. You turned back to the dead cat, she also had white fur. No denying it, she was their mother.

You turned back to the helpless kittens. Leaving them out here was a death sentence, they would starve if not before eaten by a predator or any other terrible thing that could happen to them. You knew the best thing to do would to take them home.

You quickly ran into the store, you grabbed everything you needed including kitten formula and bottles. You hurried back to your car and loaded everything up. Then you made your way back to the pipe, relieved that they were still there as if they would have vanished within the 30 seconds you were in the store.

Tenderly, with each hand, you lifted up both kittens, they mewled even louder in protest. You shushed them as you walked back to your car and gently laid them on the passenger seat. You glimpsed back at their dead mom. “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of your babies.” You whispered to yourself.
You started up the car and began the short ride back home.
